Donggureung, meaning ‘nine tombs in the east,’ is the largest royal tomb group in Joseon, built over 450 years. Beginning with Geonwonneung (健元陵) of King Taejo, who founded Joseon in 1408 (8th year of King Taejong), Hyeonneung (顯陵) of Munjong, Mokneung (穆陵) of King Seonjo, Sungneung of King Hyeonjong (崇陵), and Hwireung of Queen Jangryeol (徽陵), Queen Danui's Hyereung (惠陵), Yeongjo's Wonneung (元陵), and Heonjong's Gyeongneung (景陵) were built in succession. At the time, depending on the number of tombs, it was called Dongoreung (東五陵) and Dongchilleung (東七陵), but in 1855 (6th year of King Cheoljong), Munjo’s Sureung (綏陵) was moved to this Location, and it became the current Donggureung.
